The Avata 2's bigger sensor is the image-quality difference

Both record 4K/100fps, but the Avata 2 uses a 1/1.3-inch sensor against the Neo 2's 1/2-inch, with a higher ISO ceiling (25600 vs 12800), D-Log M and 130 Mbps against 80 Mbps. For graded footage or low light, that gap is real. For casual travel clips, the Neo 2's 2-axis gimbal with roll correction may matter more than log footage you'll never grade.

Speed, flight time and batteries

The Avata 2 reaches 27 m/s in manual mode (19 m/s in EU regions) and 16 m/s in sport mode; the Neo 2 tops out at 12 m/s. DJI lists about 23 minutes for the Avata 2 and 19 for the Neo 2, or 17 with propeller guards. Batteries aren't shared: 1606 mAh on the Neo 2, 2150 mAh on the Avata 2.

Obstacle sensing favors the Neo 2

The Neo 2 combines omnidirectional monocular vision, a downward infrared sensor and forward LiDAR. The Avata 2 has only downward and backward vision positioning, so in manual FPV flight avoiding obstacles is entirely up to you.

Goggles and registration

Both work with DJI goggles: the Neo 2 supports Goggles N3 and Goggles 3, and the Avata 2 is designed around Goggles 3. In the EU the Neo 2 is C0 and the Avata 2 is C1; operator registration and competency rules depend on the aircraft, camera use and local authority, so check before you fly. Our registration-by-weight guide covers the thresholds.

DJI Neo 2

Strengths

  • 151 g, EU C0 class
  • Omnidirectional sensing with forward LiDAR
  • 2-axis gimbal with roll correction
  • 49 GB internal storage
  • Works with Goggles N3 and Goggles 3

Drawbacks

  • Small 1/2-inch sensor, weaker in low light
  • 19-minute flight time, 17 with prop guards
  • 80 Mbps bitrate
  • 12 m/s top speed

DJI Avata 2

Strengths

  • 1/1.3-inch sensor with D-Log M
  • 27 m/s in manual mode (19 m/s in the EU)
  • 130 Mbps bitrate
  • 155° field of view
  • O4 transmission, 13 km range, 24 ms latency

Drawbacks

  • 377 g, EU C1 class
  • 1-axis gimbal relies on digital stabilization
  • Only downward and backward sensing
  • $999 versus $199

Pick the Avata 2 for real FPV, the Neo 2 for easy travel shots

If you want proper FPV flying and better footage, buy the Avata 2. Its 1/1.3-inch sensor, D-Log M, 130 Mbps bitrate and 27 m/s manual-mode speed put it well ahead of the Neo 2 for content creators, and it costs $999 against $199.

The Neo 2 is the better travel drone. At 151 g it falls in the EU C0 class, it has omnidirectional sensing with forward LiDAR, and it stores footage on 49 GB of internal memory. Registration can still apply depending on camera use and local rules, so it isn't paperwork-free.

These are different kinds of drone. Don't buy the Avata 2 if what you really want is a pocket camera for holidays.
