A larger sensor and faster 4K

The Avata 2 moves from a 1/1.7-inch to a 1/1.3-inch sensor, which on paper should help most in low light. It also records 4K at up to 100 fps, against 60 fps on the original. The one camera spec that goes the other way is maximum bitrate: the original Avata tops out higher, at 150 Mbps.

Lighter, with five more minutes in the air

Both list the same 27 m/s top speed in Manual mode. The Avata 2 is rated for 23 minutes against 18 and weighs about 377 g against 410 g. Rated flight times are manufacturer maximums and drop quickly with aggressive FPV flying, wind and cold.

Backward sensing and new goggles

The original Avata only senses downward. The Avata 2 adds backward vision positioning, which helps in tight spaces but does not make it collision-proof. Thin wires and fast flight remain a risk.

The Avata 2 is designed around DJI Goggles 3 and the O4 link. Compatibility with older DJI FPV goggles may be limited, so budget for the new goggles if you are upgrading from the original kit. If you are also weighing a 360-degree model, see the Avata 360 vs Avata 2 comparison.

DJI Avata 2

Strengths

  • Larger 1/1.3-inch sensor
  • 23-minute rated flight time
  • O4 transmission with longer range
  • 46 GB internal storage
  • Backward and downward vision sensing
  • Lighter at about 377 g

Drawbacks

  • Lower maximum video bitrate than the original's 150 Mbps
  • Built around the newer Goggles 3; older goggles may not work fully

DJI Avata

Strengths

  • Compact design with built-in propeller guards
  • Higher maximum video bitrate of 150 Mbps
  • 4K at up to 60fps

Drawbacks

  • 18-minute rated flight time
  • Smaller 1/1.7-inch sensor
  • Downward sensing only
  • Older transmission system
  • Heavier at about 410 g

Is the Avata 2 worth it over the original Avata?

Yes. If you are buying an Avata today, get the Avata 2. It has a larger 1/1.3-inch sensor, 23 minutes of rated flight time against 18, O4 transmission, 46 GB of storage and backward sensing, and it is lighter at about 377 g against 410 g.

The original Avata keeps one spec advantage: a higher maximum video bitrate of 150 Mbps. It is still a capable, guarded FPV drone, so if you already own one and are happy with the footage, there is less reason to upgrade than the spec sheet suggests.

For a beginner choosing between the two, the Avata 2's backward sensing makes it the slightly more forgiving pick.
