This page compares DJI's published specs for the two drones. Flight time and speed are manufacturer maximums measured in controlled conditions.

The Avata 2's sensor is the bigger upgrade

The Avata 2 uses a 1/1.3-inch sensor against the FPV Drone's 1/2.3-inch, and it has a higher maximum ISO. On paper that should mean cleaner footage in low light. Both record 4K/60fps; the Avata 2 also reaches 100fps in 16:9. The Avata 2 does not support RAW photos, which matters only if you want stills.

Speed against weight

DJI lists the Avata 2 at 377 g, 23 minutes and 27 m/s in Manual mode. The FPV Drone is 795 g, 20 minutes and 39 m/s in M mode. The FPV Drone is the faster aircraft by a wide margin, but it is also more than twice the weight and harder to carry. The heavier drone can also bring different operating rules depending on where you fly; see registration by weight.

Guards and sensing

The Avata 2 has integrated propeller guards plus downward and backward vision. The FPV Drone has forward and downward vision sensing, with forward sensing active only in N mode. The guards are the bigger safety difference for a beginner; no vision system makes either drone collision-proof, and thin branches or wires stay hard to detect.

Each drone has its own goggles

The Avata 2 is designed for DJI Goggles 3, while the FPV Drone works with DJI FPV Goggles V2. Some older goggles may work with the Avata 2, but if you already own V2 goggles, check compatibility before assuming you can reuse them. For another view of the Avata 2, see our Avata 2 specs analysis.

DJI Avata 2

Strengths

  • 1/1.3-inch sensor, larger than the FPV Drone's
  • 23-minute rated flight time and 46 GB internal storage
  • Built-in propeller guards
  • O4 video transmission
  • Downward and backward vision

Drawbacks

  • Lower top speed than the FPV Drone
  • Heavier than some dedicated cinematic FPV drones
  • No RAW photos

DJI FPV Drone

Strengths

  • Higher top speed: 39 m/s in M mode
  • Sturdier build for aggressive flying
  • Hybrid design for FPV and conventional flight
  • Works with DJI FPV Goggles V2

Drawbacks

  • Smaller 1/2.3-inch sensor with a lower ISO range
  • 20-minute rated flight time and no internal storage
  • 795 g, much heavier and larger
  • Older O3+ transmission
  • Forward sensing only in N mode

Pick the Avata 2 unless top speed is what you want

Most FPV buyers should get the DJI Avata 2. It has a larger 1/1.3-inch sensor, a longer rated flight time, 46 GB of internal storage, O4 transmission and built-in propeller guards, and it weighs less than half as much as the DJI FPV Drone.

The original DJI FPV Drone still has the higher top speed, 39 m/s in M mode against 27 m/s for the Avata 2 in Manual mode, and a more aggressive flight feel. If raw speed is the point, it is the one to look at. For cinematic flying or learning FPV, the Avata 2 is the easier recommendation.
