DJI Flip vs Mini 5 Pro: Guarded Vlog Drone or 1-Inch Camera?
The DJI Flip and the Mini 5 Pro both weigh about 249 g, both fold into a bag and both shoot 4K with a three-axis gimbal. They are aimed at different people. The Flip, launched in January 2025 at $439 with the RC-N3, is a guarded, palm-launch vlogging drone. The Mini 5 Pro, launched in September 2025, is DJI’s most capable sub-250 g camera drone: a 1-inch, 50 MP sensor, 4K/120, forward LiDAR and a gimbal that rotates past vertical.
There is also a buying difference that matters more than any spec in the US: the Flip is sold there normally, while the Mini 5 Pro was never launched by DJI in the US and only appears on Amazon through third-party sellers.

Short version: the Flip for vlogging, family trips and flying near people. The Mini 5 Pro for landscape and travel photography where image quality comes first, if you can buy it where you live.
Camera: a full sensor size apart
A 1-inch sensor has roughly twice the area of the Flip’s 1/1.3-inch chip. The Mini 5 Pro’s gain is most visible in low light and high-contrast scenes: cleaner shadows at dusk, more highlight detail in sunsets, sharper 50 MP stills. It also adds 4K/120 slow motion, HLG for HDR displays and a gimbal that rolls far enough for true vertical shots.
The Flip is no slouch. Its 1/1.3-inch sensor is the same size as the Mini 4 Pro’s, it records 4K/60 HDR and 4K/100, and it offers D-Log M. For social clips and vlogs viewed on a phone, most viewers will not see the gap.
Safety: guards versus sensors
The two drones handle safety differently. The Flip encloses its propellers in full guards, so a brush against a wall or a person is far less likely to cause damage or injury, and it can take off from and land in your palm. Its only obstacle sensor faces forward.
The Mini 5 Pro has no guards but sees in every direction, with a forward LiDAR sensor that works at night down to 0.5 m. It is better at not hitting things on its own; the Flip is more forgiving when something does go wrong.
Range, battery and wind
The Mini 5 Pro flies longer (36 minutes against 31), copes with stronger wind (12 m/s against 10.7) and reaches further on paper (20 km FCC against 13 km). With the Battery Plus, which is not sold in the EU, it reaches 52 minutes but goes over 250 g.
Availability in the US
This is where many US buyers stop. DJI never put the Mini 5 Pro on its US store, citing market conditions, and it carries LiDAR, the feature named in the FCC’s pending proposal on “military-grade” foreign drones. Amazon US listings come from retailers rather than DJI, so warranty and support depend on who sells it; check the “Sold by” line. The Flip received FCC authorization before the December 2025 Covered List cut-off and is sold normally. Our DJI US availability guide explains the background.
Which one should you buy?
- Flip: vlogging, travel with family, flying near people, palm launches. The safer, simpler choice and the easier one to buy in the US.
- Mini 5 Pro: image quality first, low-light landscapes, 50 MP stills, slow motion. Best bought where DJI sells it officially.
- US buyers who want more camera than the Flip without a grey import: the Mini 4 Pro has the same sensor size as the Flip, adds omnidirectional sensing and is sold normally.

Frequently asked questions
Is the DJI Mini 5 Pro better than the Flip?
For image quality, yes: a 1-inch, 50 MP sensor against 1/1.3-inch, 4K/120 against 4K/100, omnidirectional sensing with LiDAR and longer flight time. The Flip is better for flying near people, thanks to full propeller guards and palm launch, and it is sold officially in the US.
Does the DJI Flip have obstacle avoidance?
Partly. It has a forward 3D infrared sensor and downward sensors, but nothing to the sides or behind. The Mini 5 Pro senses in all directions.
Is the DJI Mini 5 Pro under 250 g?
DJI lists a takeoff weight of 249.9 g with a tolerance of about ±4 g, so an individual unit can weigh slightly more; DroneXL reports production units at 252–253 g. A drone at 250 g or more must be registered with the FAA. With the Battery Plus it is clearly over 250 g.
Can you buy the DJI Mini 5 Pro in the US?
Not from DJI. It was never listed on DJI’s US store. Amazon US listings are from third-party sellers, so check who sells it and what warranty applies.
Which is better for vlogging, Flip or Mini 5 Pro?
The Flip. It is designed for it: palm takeoff, propeller guards for flying close to people, and simple follow and QuickShot modes.
