DJI Mini 5 Pro vs Mavic 3 Pro: Can a 249 g Drone Replace a Triple-Camera Mavic?
The DJI Mini 5 Pro and the Mavic 3 Pro end up on the same shortlist for a simple reason: the 249.9 g Mini now has a 1-inch sensor, and buyers want to know whether that is enough to skip a 958 g triple-camera Mavic. On paper, the answer depends on two things the Mini cannot do: the Mavic 3 Pro’s larger 4/3-inch Hasselblad sensor and its two telephoto cameras.
Here is how the two compare, what each one is actually better at, and why US availability tilts the decision.

Short version: the Mini 5 Pro is the better travel drone and the newer flight platform. The Mavic 3 Pro is still the better camera system if you need telephoto compression, a larger sensor or variable aperture.
Image quality: closer than it used to be
A 4/3-inch sensor has roughly 1.7 times the area of a 1-inch sensor, and the Mavic 3 Pro adds a variable aperture (f/2.8–f/11) that lets you control exposure for long shutter speeds without ND filters. In low light and high-contrast scenes it keeps an edge. The Mini 5 Pro has more pixels (50 MP against 20 MP) and a brighter f/1.8 lens, which narrows the gap in daylight landscapes and stills.
Video tilts towards the Mavic for professional work: 5.1K/50, full D-Log and, on the Cine version, Apple ProRes. The Mini 5 Pro’s 4K/120 slow motion and D-Log M are enough for most creators, and its gimbal rolls far enough for true vertical video.
Telephoto: the Mavic’s real advantage
This is the part no Mini replaces. The Mavic 3 Pro carries a 70 mm medium telephoto with a 48 MP 1/1.3-inch sensor and a 166 mm telephoto. Those let you compress a landscape, shoot a subject from a distance or frame architecture without flying closer. The Mini 5 Pro offers digital zoom only, up to 3x in 4K, which crops the sensor rather than adding a lens.
Portability, rules and flight
At a listed 249.9 g, the Mini 5 Pro fits a jacket pocket, but DJI quotes a ±4 g tolerance and DroneXL reports production units at 252–253 g. A drone at 250 g or more must be registered with the FAA, so weigh yours or simply register it; it costs $5. The 958 g Mavic 3 Pro must be registered, broadcast Remote ID and, in the EU, is flown in a stricter category. See our registration by weight guide.
The Mini 5 Pro is also the newer flight platform: O4 transmission rated to 20 km (FCC) against O3+ at 15 km, and forward LiDAR on top of omnidirectional vision. The Mavic 3 Pro flies longer (43 minutes against 36) and both handle winds up to 12 m/s.
US availability
DJI never launched the Mini 5 Pro in the US, and the model carries LiDAR, the feature named in the FCC’s pending “military-grade” proposal. Amazon US listings come from retailers rather than DJI. The Mavic 3 Pro was authorized and sold in the US before the Covered List decision of December 2025 and is still listed on Amazon. More in our LiDAR proposal explainer.
Which one should you buy?
- Mini 5 Pro: travel, hiking, everyday landscapes and social video; you want one small drone, and you can buy it where DJI sells it.
- Mavic 3 Pro: you shoot telephoto, need ProRes or full D-Log, or deliver paid work where the larger sensor and variable aperture count.
- Also consider: the Mavic 4 Pro replaces the Mavic 3 Pro at the top of DJI’s range, and the Air 3S sits between the two with a 1-inch main camera and a 70 mm tele.

Frequently asked questions
Is the DJI Mini 5 Pro as good as the Mavic 3 Pro?
Not overall. The Mini 5 Pro’s 1-inch sensor closes much of the gap in daylight, but the Mavic 3 Pro has a larger 4/3-inch sensor, variable aperture, 5.1K video and two optical telephoto cameras. The Mini wins on size, weight and newer transmission and sensing.
Does the Mini 5 Pro have a telephoto camera?
No. It has one camera with digital zoom up to 3x in 4K. The Mavic 3 Pro has 70 mm and 166 mm telephoto cameras.
Does the Mavic 3 Pro need to be registered?
Yes. At 958 g it is over the 250 g threshold, so it must be registered with the FAA and broadcast Remote ID, even for recreational flying.
Which flies longer, Mini 5 Pro or Mavic 3 Pro?
The Mavic 3 Pro, at up to 43 minutes against 36 for the Mini 5 Pro on its standard battery. With the Battery Plus, where sold, the Mini 5 Pro reaches 52 minutes but goes over 250 g.
Can you buy the Mini 5 Pro in the US?
Not from DJI. It was never listed on DJI’s US store, and Amazon US listings come from retailers rather than DJI.
